The hunter claims that he was alone when he downed this elk in North Dakota, set his camera up on the timer and took the picture. He never knew about the mountain lion about 10 feet behind him until he looked at the pictures the next morning.

You decide.  Real or Fake?

It could be real as this has happened before where people go their film developed and saw a mountain lion in the back ground, but I think this one is fake. I checked with some of the online sites that check these out, but it is too new so they don\'t have anything on it. Here is why I think it is fake:
1- The description the guy writes is too fake. The way he explains how he took the picture is too contrived. He also says \"I knew there were cats in the area, but I had not idea they would come in this close to people.\" Give me a break- your a hunter and don\'t know cats are predators, stealthy, and curious?
2- If I am alone and I set the timer on my camera to take a picture, after the flash goes off I check the camera to see if it took the picture correctly and if it is framed correctly. I don\'t wait until the next morning. This to me is the most fake part of the whole thing. No one snaps a timer picture with a digital camera then goes on his merry way. If he wants a good picture, he checks to see that he set it up correctly.
3- Also, though this is less convincing, the cat looks like it doesn\'t fit in the photo. It doesn\'t seem to be standing appropriately for the lay of the ground.

Fake - here\'s the original cougar photo:

    http://bp0.blogger.com/_UV9jSNGDpqU/R8YkxNOAK4I/AAAAAAAABL8/F9qn0TiZfpU/s1600-h/Mtn+lion+573.jpg

I received the hi-res verson via email. Zooming in, it\'s not very convincing - a hasty photoshop job.

Todd nailed it, nobody takes a pic with the timer and doesn\'t look at the results. Especially a pic of a nice elk.

Nice work CC - how did you find a pic of the cougar?

Fake. Exposure on the lion is wrong compared to the hunter and elk. Nice job finding the original lion photo. Pretty good Photoshop effort, tho, I gotta say.

ok the more and more i stare at this photo, i am thinking it may be real! i mean the mountain lion fits right in the opening of the trees and it would take one hell of a photoshop job to pull that one off! i am sorry it could go both ways but the more i look it could be real!!!! if so how fing cool!

Come on people you cannot photoshop this well with the branch and under growth around this cat.I have had several mountain lions put the sneek on me hunting in 35 years,I have seen 6 and heard about 4 as i reflect .My uncle shot one as it lunged at him on the sneek that did not make a sound. What I have trouble with is that the cat did not screech or growl at the hunter /this seems odd and that he did not check his picture right after he took it? The cat does not look afraid either or acting like a predator stalking?

Photo-shopping like this couldn\'t be easier.

But it\'s weird how far-flung this photo is.

(Just had a fellow show it to me on his cell phone and claim the hunter was his son).

Maybe the hunter\'s actually my long-lost brother who was kidnapped by Big Foot when we were camping at Mt. Shasta at the Folks Who\'ve Been Abducted By Aliens convention.

    Obviously a fake!

No red eye in either the hunter or freshly killed elk.

The same Cougar photo without hunter or elk is readily available.

ok to start off I\'m going to point out the obvious cats have more reflective eyes than humans and dead animals eyes do not reflect
secondly he could have used red eye flash which would have fixed his eyes but not the cats
thirdly if he did not use a digital camera he could not look at the pictures right away
and finally i have looked at the so called original photo of the mountain and it was obviously photo shopped

so my conclusion is that it could quite possibly be real

look at the antlers, they make an obvious shadow on the hunter, but the branch that is over the cougar at the same angle as the antler to hunter, it makes no shadow. to terry-you could do this in the simple paint application, wouldnt even need photo shop for something this easy. and the dead give away is the real picture of the cougar :)

Anyone who knows p-shop could do this in five minutes. First you cut\'n paste in the cougar; then you cut\'n paste in the branch.

    Dead easy.

As being a highly experienced cougar hunter and being stalked by many cats while hunting them in Washington, Montana, and North Dakota, I have never in my life imagined a cougar standing so calmly with a human so close. I mean, COME ON!!!!!!! This is the most FAKE photo I have ever seen. Cats DO NOT walk up on people unless you are in fairy land. Cougars are EXTREMELY intelligent animals.I would believe it if the cat was being stealthy and ACTUALLY hiding itself.

I had an experience last night that blows your theory out of the water. I am an avid hunter, raised in MT, live in WA state now, know the outdoors well & I had a mtn lion sneak in on me last night in the dark while I was field dressing my deer (w/ in 40\')

Just take a quick look at the slant in his paws, they do not come close to being the correct position for the slant of the mountain side the cat is standing. Superfake!!!

This mountain lion sure is a wussy one, why doesn\'t he just eat that fat bastard. The last time I was attacked he took both of my legs and left me for dead. If it wasn\'t for the keen instinct of the raven\'s to hone in on my bloody scent the rescue moose never would\'ve found me....!

If you take a look at the \'real\' photo with just the cougar, that\'s the one that looks photoshopped. There is no undergrowth around it\'s paws, and no shadow. I think the hunter is telling the truth and somebody just wanted to say he was wrong.

It\'s fake. The original cat photo was taken by Biologist with his cam trap. It was posted back in 2008. The foliage in the fake hunting pic was added to the original, it would be impossible to remove the foliage with Photoshop. Example: Cover you face with your hand and take a pic. Now try to find photo editing software that will see through your hand, and give you a clear high def image of your face. I\'ll save you the trouble it does not exist. Now take a photo of your face and a photo of your hand. Using microsoft paint I could cover your face with your hand in minutes even less time with Photoshop because of the layering feature.
